Portraits
Portraits are important in photography because they allow us to permanently capture important moments and dates for posterity.They can portray an earlier snippet in time, our possible future, or a moment in the here and now. A portrait captures the essence of a subject in that very moment the photograph was taken. If things go perfectly, it just might also capture the soul. Portrait photography melds light, sound, emotion, atmosphere,and collaborative energy together in a way that creates a tapestry, highlighting the subject in both highs and lows. Through the medium of portrait photography, you can capture the tear-stained visage of a widow, the jubilant smile of a child as they open a birthday present, the cleverness behind the arch of an eyebrow or the gentleness of two hands clasped in loving union.
I like shooting portraits because:
- Portraits freeze time for a particular moment;
- It captures the raw emotion behind a subject;
- Eyes are the windows of the soul, teaching more about human psychology than a million words could ever hope to;
- The sharpness and uniqueness of each subject’s body.
“I’ve never taken a photograph of someone and created a persona, I’ve just discovered what was already there.”
